Beer Restrictions in Euro 2008?

The International Herald Tribune reports on the call from Austrian police for only week beer to be served in the Euro 2008 finals next year.

The worrying thing is that they're already far down the line in making this happen. A police spokesman, Peter Jedelsky said that they're "close to working out a light beer with the beer industry".

Even worse is that it appears that all beer will have to be served in "plastic cups", that's not a problem, but what are they going to do about people's fists?

If people want to get plastered and have a punch up, they'll just drink spirits or top up the weak beer with something stronger.

I'm glad they're thinking about security. But in my experience it's how fans are treated by the locals and the police that causes the violence. Treat fans like humans and they won't act like dogs.
